An overview on the aquaculture development in Colombia: Current status, opportunities and challenges

Colombia due to its geographical location is provided with different climatic zones, that are suitable for continental and marine aquaculture of a wide range species high possibility commercialisation. Currently, the production comes mainly from ponds floating cage systems, supplying more than 90% freshwater saltwater organisms consumed in country, where based on tilapia, trout, cachama shrimp. This review aims provide information current value chain development by describing systems highlighting their limitations make difficult achieve efficiency combined necessary sustainability. has all potential develop tropical aquaculture, which should focus native fish breeding, genetic improvement, high-tech agro-industrial biomass valorisation. Future trends perspectives also analysed this review.
